City pursues TIGER 2016 grant, local match for Fourth Street extension

City to issue RFP for Fourth & Wisconsin parcel, to include a streetcar station

In May, the City of Milwaukee applied for a $20 million federal TIGER grant for The Milwaukee Streetcar’s proposed Fourth Street Extension. This month, the City begins the process of seeking Common Council approval for a $20 million local match, funded using two existing and one new Tax Incremental Finance Districts. The process includes a hearing at the Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee (RACM) on June 16 and at the Council’s Zoning and Neighborhood Development committee on June 28, both of which provide opportunities for public comment. There is the potential for a vote by the full Council later this summer.

The Fourth Street Extension is a critical next step to expanding The Milwaukee Streetcar system to more neighborhoods, especially Bronzeville and Walker’s Point. City officials are beginning to plan extensions into these neighborhoods. Running between the Intermodal Station and the new Milwaukee Bucks Arena and ancillary development, the Fourth Street Extension would connect numerous destinations in the Westown neighborhood to other parts of the streetcar line. TIGER 2016 grant awards are expected to be announced this fall.

Later this month, the City of Milwaukee Department of City Development (DCD) is planning to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the sale and development of the city-owned lot at Fourth & Wisconsin. The RFP will require incorporation of a streetcar station for any submitted proposals. This planned streetcar connection could improve the site significantly due to the modern transit connection, as well as a reduction in the large footprint of the site, which has been identified as a deterrent to some developers.

Milwaukee Press Club luncheon goes “Behind the Headlines: The Status of the Streetcar”

On Wednesday, June 15, the Wisconsin Bike Fed, in cooperation with the City of Milwaukee, is leading a free group bike ride of The Milwaukee Streetcar Phase 1 route. The ride will start at 5:30 p.m. at the north end of the route at Burns Commons (the park at Prospect Avenue and Ogden Avenue) with a brief Share & Be Aware bike safety presentation. City officials will then lead a bike tour of the route ending at Newaukee’s Night Market downtown at Fourth and Wisconsin. There will be a couple of stops along the way to point out streetcar route highlights. The ride is limited to 50 participants. Special thanks to Newaukee! Register and sign the required waiver here.

The Milwaukee Press Club (MPC) is hosting a luncheon on Thursday, June 16 dedicated to the topic of The Milwaukee Streetcar project. The panel of journalists will ask Ashley Booth, Planning and Tech Services Director, HNTB; Jeff Polenske, City Engineer, City of Milwaukee; and Beth Weirick, CEO, Downtown Business Improvement District (BID #21) questions about the status of the project, who is involved, and what citizens of Milwaukee and downtown employees and visitors should expect. The event is open to the public, but all attendees must be pre-registered and bring photo ID. The cost to attend is $20 for MPC members, $25 for non-members. More here.
